Now I know some of you may be thinking that this particular revelation comes a little late for someone who has been a parent for a little more than 26 years, but I think the learning as a parent never really stops. I see the significant impact the parents have on their kids by the way they respond to relationship issues, difficult times in life and matters of trust and honesty. Failing to live up to God expectations in any of these areas not only can seriously impact and damage relationships for parents, but it has a trickledown effect that also has a negative influence on the kids.

As the nation braces for the inauguration of a President who ran (and won) in part on an anti-immigrant platform, Martin Marty writes a column on this very topic, taking note of the statements from the Archbishop of Chicago — Blase Cupich — as well as the nominee for Attorney General.

I write this post with a bit of pastoral concern: Lisa and I have met some wives and the occasional husband who felt tempted to compromise their faith and even their own sense of sanity because they realized after getting married that their spouse has some sexual hang-ups. Nursing an unhealthy inclination never makes things better; it just makes the way back a little longer and ultimately more difficult.

Seeking a healthy sexual relationship is a fair and good and wise and holy pursuit. Christian sex is always relational sex. Pornography, voyeurism, predatory touching, any form of paying for sex, exhibitionism, group sex, anonymous sex, or objectifying marital sex all have the same common denominator: Most forms of sexual deviancy include a separation between sex and emotional connection.

In a biblical view of sex, physical intimacy draws husband and wife ever closer together.

I celebrate myself, and sing myself, And what I assume you shall assume, For every atom belonging to me as good belongs to you. I loafe and invite my soul, I lean and loafe at my ease observing a spear of summer grass. My tongue, every atom of my blood, form’d from this soil, this air, Born here of parents born here from parents the same, and their parents the same, I, now thirty-seven years old in perfect health begin, Hoping to cease not till death.

Part Two Pastoral Issues with Cohabiting Couples in Marriage Preparation Preparation for marriage begins long before the couple approaches the priest or pastoral minister.

October 07, Matthew Look, I have prepared my dinner, my oxen and my fat calves have been slaughtered, and everything is ready; come to the wedding banquet. We’ve constantly got to come back to that. The Gospels capture that from beginning to end. Jesus is a person who confronts us through his Word.
